A Wedding of Elegance, Atmosphere and Castle Grandeur
There are few wedding venues in Cheshire quite like Peckforton Castle. From its imposing sandstone walls and medieval architecture to its candlelit interiors and beautiful surrounding countryside, it's a setting with a character entirely of its own.
Rebecca and Daniel's April wedding made wonderful use of everything the castle has to offer. Their day combined an elegant ceremony in the Great Hall, spectacular floral arrangements, relaxed moments with family and friends, and some beautifully atmospheric portraits around the castle.
As a wedding photographer, Peckforton Castle is a venue I particularly enjoy working at. The architecture, changing light and variety of spaces offer opportunities for both natural documentary photography and more considered editorial portraits.
GETTING MARRIED AT PECKFORTON CASTLE?
A Candlelit Ceremony in the Great Hall
The Great Hall provided a spectacular setting for Rebecca and Daniel's ceremony. Beneath its soaring vaulted ceiling, the aisle was lined with candles, abundant white flowers and soft greenery, creating a beautiful contrast against the castle's warm sandstone walls.
Rebecca looked stunning in her intricately detailed lace gown and long embroidered veil, while Daniel's deep green three-piece suit complemented the floral styling perfectly. Together, they brought a timeless elegance to a setting already full of character.
Despite the grandeur of the surroundings, it was the quieter moments that made the ceremony particularly lovely to photograph. The expressions, the glances between the couple and the reactions of family and friends gave the occasion its own warmth and personality.
Wedding Portraits Around Peckforton Castle
One of the pleasures of photographing weddings at Peckforton Castle is the variety of locations available without ever needing to leave the venue. From imposing stone archways and winding staircases to quieter corners filled with beautiful natural light, every part of the castle offers something different.
For Rebecca and Daniel, we made use of several of these settings, creating a mixture of relaxed photographs together and more considered portraits that complemented the architecture. Rebecca's beautifully detailed gown looked particularly striking against the sandstone, while the dramatic staircase provided an opportunity for something a little more atmospheric.
The Moments Between Everything Else
Some of my favourite photographs from Rebecca and Daniel's wedding happened away from the main events. Guests catching up in the castle grounds, spontaneous laughter, children enjoying themselves and those little moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
As the afternoon continued, there was a lovely atmosphere around Peckforton Castle. Friends and family were making the most of being together, and the photographs tell that part of the story just as much as the ceremony and portraits.
These are often the images that become more meaningful with time — familiar faces, genuine expressions and a reminder of how the day actually felt.
Beautiful Details and a Candlelit Wedding Reception
The attention to detail continued into the wedding reception, where elegant white floral arrangements, soft greenery and an abundance of candlelight complemented the castle's historic interiors.
Tall floral centrepieces brought height and drama to the tables, while delicate stationery, glassware and carefully placed candles created a warm, inviting atmosphere. The styling felt luxurious without competing with the character of the room.
As the celebrations continued, the focus shifted from the beautifully arranged surroundings to the people enjoying them. Laughter during the speeches, conversations around the tables and those fleeting expressions between family and friends were just as important to capture as the more formal moments of the day.
An Evening to Remember at Peckforton CastLE
As the evening celebrations began, the atmosphere shifted from the elegance of the wedding breakfast to something altogether more lively.
Rebecca and Daniel's first dance brought everyone together, with a wonderful moment as Daniel dipped Rebecca for a kiss in front of their cheering guests. Before long, the dance floor was full of laughter, raised glasses and friends enjoying every minute.
For me, this is another important part of photographing a wedding. The formalities are over, everyone has relaxed, and some of the most entertaining and spontaneous photographs of the day begin to unfold.
It was a fitting end to a wonderful celebration at Peckforton Castle.
Peckforton Castle Wedding Photography - Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best locations for wedding photographs at Peckforton Castle?
One of the things I love about Peckforton Castle is the variety of locations within a relatively small area. The stone archways, courtyards and impressive staircases all offer something different. Rather than working through a fixed list of photographs, I prefer to choose locations according to the light, weather and atmosphere on the day.
How much time should we allow for our couple portraits?
Usually, around 20–30 minutes is plenty, and we can divide that time into two shorter sessions if it suits your day. Peckforton Castle offers so many beautiful backdrops that there's no need to spend an hour away from your guests. My approach is to create a small collection of beautiful portraits without making the photography feel like a separate event.
Can we still get beautiful wedding photographs if it rains?
Absolutely. Some of Peckforton Castle's most atmospheric locations are indoors. Its staircases, stone corridors and grand interiors provide wonderful opportunities for portraits, and the softer light on an overcast day can be particularly flattering. There's always a way to make the most of the conditions.
Is a second photographer worthwhile for a Peckforton Castle wedding?
It can be, particularly if you're both getting ready in different parts of the castle or would like additional coverage of your guests and ceremony reactions. My colleague Bianca is available as an optional second photographer, allowing us to capture different perspectives and moments happening at the same time.
How do you photograph a wedding naturally while still creating editorial portraits?
Most of the day is photographed as it unfolds, capturing the atmosphere, emotions and interactions without interruption. When we take a little time for couple portraits, I'll offer direction where it's helpful, making the most of the setting without keeping you away from your guests for too long.
Having photographed several weddings at Peckforton Castle, I'm familiar with its architecture, grounds and changing light. That experience helps me create more considered portraits alongside the genuine moments, while keeping everything relaxed and enjoyable.
