An Autumn Wedding Full of Love, Laughter and Timeless Elegance

Some wedding venues have a character all of their own, and Blencowe Hall in the Cumbrian countryside is certainly one of them. With its ancient stone towers, beautiful gardens and centuries of history, it's a remarkable setting for a wedding both night and day.

I had the pleasure of photographing Tammy and Phil's wedding here on a beautiful autumn day in October, surrounded by their family and friends.

From the excitement of the morning preparations to the laughter and emotion of their intimate ceremony, their wedding was filled with genuine moments, wonderful personalities and a relaxed atmosphere.

As a wedding photographer, these are the celebrations I love to capture. Real connections, natural emotions and the little moments that often become the most treasured memories - alongside a collection of elegant, editorial portraits that make the most of such a spectacular setting.

GETTING MARRIED AT BLENCOWE HALL?

A Historic Wedding Venue in the Heart of Cumbria

Set in the peaceful countryside near Penrith, Blencowe Hall is a beautifully restored Grade I listed historic manor, with origins dating back to the 14th century.

Its two fortified sandstone towers, cobbled courtyard, traditional stone walls and landscaped gardens give the venue an unmistakable sense of history. Inside, original features including exposed wooden beams, stone fireplaces and characterful rooms create a wonderfully atmospheric setting for a wedding.

What makes Blencowe Hall particularly special is the contrast between its medieval architecture and the comfort of its beautifully restored interiors. It feels grand without being overwhelming, making it ideal for couples who want a wedding that is both elegant and personal.

The surrounding Cumbrian countryside adds another dimension, with beautiful seasonal colours, open landscapes and plenty of opportunities for natural wedding photography.

For Tammy and Phil's October wedding, the autumn light and rich tones of the historic stonework provided a lovely backdrop to the day.

A Relaxed Morning of Wedding Preparations

The morning began inside the beautiful rooms of Blencowe Hall, where Tammy was getting ready surrounded by the people closest to her.

There was a lovely mixture of excitement, laughter and those quieter moments that naturally unfold before a wedding ceremony. From the finishing touches to the bridal accessories to sharing smiles and conversations, everything felt relaxed and personal.

Tammy's elegant wedding dress was particularly beautiful, with delicate lace detailing and a flowing train complemented by a long, intricately embroidered veil.

The character of the rooms, warm wooden floors and soft natural light created a wonderful setting for the bridal photographs, allowing us to capture both the finer details and the genuine emotions of the morning.

Elsewhere in the Hall, Phil was preparing for the ceremony. The historic windows and atmospheric interiors offered some lovely opportunities for timeless black-and-white photographs, alongside natural moments as everyone got ready for the celebrations ahead.

An Intimate Wedding Ceremony Filled with Laughter

Tammy and Phil's wedding ceremony was held inside Blencowe Hall, surrounded by their family and friends in a wonderfully intimate setting.

The room was beautifully atmospheric, with exposed wooden beams, warm lighting, candles lining the aisle and a wonderful sense of anticipation as everyone gathered.

As the ceremony began, the flower girl made her way down the aisle carrying her floral basket, before Tammy entered to join Phil.

What I loved most about the ceremony was how naturally the couple's personalities shone through. There were some wonderful moments of spontaneous laughter, shared smiles and genuine happiness between them.

These are often my favourite photographs from a wedding day — moments that can't be planned or recreated, but capture exactly how it felt to be there.

The laughter between Tammy and Phil was a perfect example, and one of my favourite memories from photographing their wedding at Blencowe Hall.

For Tammy and Phil, it was the perfect setting. Their wedding was full of laughter, relaxed moments and time spent with the people closest to them. The intimate ceremony, celebrations in the gardens and natural portraits around the hall all came together beautifully.

As a photographer, I particularly loved the variety of settings. From the soft light inside the historic rooms to the impressive stonework outside, there were opportunities for both natural documentary photographs and more considered editorial portraits.

An Evening to Remember at Blencowe Hall

As the afternoon gave way to evening, Blencowe Hall took on a completely different atmosphere. The old stone walls, softly lit windows and historic courtyard made a wonderful backdrop for some of my favourite photographs of the day.

We made time for a few portraits after dark, using the hall's beautiful architecture to create something a little more dramatic while keeping Tammy and Phil's connection at the heart of the images.

One of the highlights was the sparkler celebration in the courtyard. Surrounded by family and friends, Tammy and Phil shared a lovely moment together as the sparklers illuminated the evening.

It was a fitting way to finish a wedding full of warmth, laughter and genuinely lovely people.

A Little History Behind Blencowe Hall

Blencowe Hall is a place with centuries of history written into its stonework. From the imposing towers and weathered sandstone walls to the intricate carvings and original ironwork, there's so much character to discover around the grounds.

Dating back to the late 15th century, with significant additions made in 1590, this Grade I listed fortified manor house has an interesting past. Its historic towers have witnessed centuries of change, including damage during the English Civil War, before the building was carefully restored.

As a photographer, I was particularly drawn to the architectural details outside. The carved stonework above the entrance, heavy timber doors and historic features provided some wonderful opportunities to capture the character of Blencowe Hall beyond the wedding celebrations themselves.

It's these little details that make the setting so distinctive, particularly for a relaxed, intimate wedding surrounded by history.

Yes, and that's part of its charm. Blencowe Hall is particularly well suited to smaller weddings, where couples can celebrate with their closest family and friends in a relaxed, personal setting. The historic rooms, beautiful courtyard and surrounding gardens create a wonderful atmosphere without the scale of a large wedding venue.

Tammy and Phil's wedding was a lovely example of how special a smaller celebration here can feel.

Where are the best places for wedding photographs at Blencowe Hall?

The historic sandstone towers, cobbled courtyard and gardens offer some beautiful backdrops. I particularly love the contrast between the old stonework and the surrounding countryside. Inside, the characterful rooms and natural window light are equally lovely for relaxed, editorial-style portraits.

Is Blencowe Hall a good choice for an autumn wedding?

There's no need to worry about the photography. Blencowe Hall has plenty of character indoors, with beautiful windows, exposed beams and historic stonework. We can create lovely photographs inside and make the most of any breaks in the weather for portraits outdoors.
