Rebecca & James’ Gisburne Park Estate Wedding

A relaxed, fun-filled wedding at Gisburne Park Estate

Some weddings are all about the details. Others are about the setting. Rebecca and James’ wedding at Gisburne Park Estate had both, but what really made the day were the people, the dogs and all those brilliant little moments that simply couldn't have been planned.

Set among the woodland and open countryside of the Ribble Valley, Gisburne Park was the perfect backdrop for a wedding that felt relaxed from beginning to end.

And judging by the amount of laughter throughout the day, nobody was taking themselves too seriously.

Rebecca and James chose five hours of photography coverage, proving you don't always need a full day to capture the atmosphere, emotion and story of a wedding.

A wedding full of real moments

My approach to wedding photography has always been about watching what is happening rather than constantly interrupting it.

Rebecca and James gave me exactly the kind of day I love photographing.

There were children disappearing into clouds of bubbles, dogs getting involved whenever possible, huge hugs, guests laughing together and moments happening in every direction.

One of my favourite photographs from the day came from something incredibly simple — a young boy completely surrounded by bubbles. Another was Rebecca caught in a huge laughing embrace with one of the younger guests.

Neither needed setting up.

They were simply there to be noticed and photographed.

That's what documentary wedding photography is really about for me: recognising the moments that will mean something years later.

Wedding photography at Gisburne Park Estate

Gisburne Park Estate gives you an enormous amount of variety as a photographer.

The woodland paths, bridges and surrounding countryside create beautiful natural locations without needing to disappear from the wedding for an hour-long photoshoot.

Rebecca and James could simply take a walk together, dogs included, while I photographed them along the way.

A little gentle direction when needed, but nothing that turned their wedding day into a photography session.

Some of my favourite portraits came from those walks through the estate — holding hands beneath the festoon lights, crossing the wooden bridge and wandering through the trees with the dogs trotting alongside them.

Relaxed, natural photographs that still have a refined, editorial feel.

The dogs were very much part of the wedding

It would be impossible to tell the story of this wedding without mentioning the dogs.

They appeared throughout the photographs and brought so much character to the day. From joining Rebecca and James for portraits to being carried around by the younger guests, they were very clearly part of the family.

Even the wedding cake got in on the act, with its brilliant dog-themed decoration.

It's these personal touches that make one wedding completely different from another.

Laughter from beginning to end

As the celebrations continued, there was no shortage of reactions to photograph.

The speeches produced some fantastic expressions from Rebecca and James, but I was just as interested in what was happening around them — conversations between guests, children playing and those split-second moments of chaos and laughter that often become some of my favourite photographs from a wedding.

That's why I don't arrive with a checklist of photographs that every wedding has to look like.

Every couple is different.

Every group of family and friends is different.

And every wedding deserves to look like their wedding, rather than somebody else's.

Natural Gisburne Park wedding photography

Rebecca and James’ day is a great example of how I like to photograph weddings.

Beautiful portraits absolutely have their place, but they sit alongside the photographs nobody could have planned: the hugs, laughter, children playing, dogs running around and all the little interactions happening between the people you chose to spend your wedding day with.

Those are often the photographs that become more valuable with time.

If you're planning a Gisburne Park Estate wedding and want photography that lets you enjoy the day rather than spend it posing for photographs,

I'd love to hear what you're planning.
